Description

Tulchan Lodge is an asymmetrical two-storey shooting lodge built between 1905 and 1907 by Maitland and Sons of Tain. The exterior features bull-faced rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The entrance is located on the south front within an advanced square three-storey tower that has a corbelled and crenellated wallhead, along with a similarly detailed caphouse and angle stair turret. Above the simple recessed entrance door is the McCorquodale coat of arms. Gabled bays flank the entrance, with some as canted bay windows that rise to full height on the right, featuring swept corbelling below the gable and angled alignment to the southwest. The east elevation is also gabled but is plainer, housing the service area at the northeast. The dining room in the east gable has French windows, and the building includes single and two-pane glazing. The ridge and end stacks are coped and string-coursed, with the end stacks slightly projecting and having corbelled gable flues. The front bargeboards are adorned with carved guilloche moulding, and the roofs are covered with slate.

Inside, the lodge features an oak-panelled entrance stair hall with slender turned balusters leading to the staircase and the first-floor landing. A portion of the hall adjacent to the staircase is partially screened by a basket-arched arcade supported by fluted wooden pilasters with Ionic capitals. The moulded chimneypiece in this area is supported by engaged columns and features a carved overmantel. The drawing room has a simple ceiling cornice and an ornate Renaissance revival carved chimneypiece. The dining room also boasts a decorative ceiling cornice and a carved chimneypiece. The library is panelled and includes some reused panelling, a moulded plaster ceiling, and a moulded wooden chimneypiece supported by substantial turned balusters.
