Description

Inshes House dates to 1767, although it incorporates parts of an earlier house. It is a tall, symmetrical three-bay, three-storey building with a basement, facing northwest. A range of single-storey buildings from the 19th century extends to the rear. The walls are harled, with ashlar dressings. The central entrance features a rusticated ashlar doorpiece with decorative buckle detailing, a lintel of similar material with a dated keystone beneath a semi-circular arch, and flanking key-blocked oculi. The double-leaf panelled doors are topped by a radial fanlight, and a reused step has a moulded riser. The northeast gable has two windows on each storey, while the southwest gable has one window on each storey. A reused armorial panel is set below the centre wallhead stack, which has an inscribed and dated plaque. The windows are fitted with 2-pane glazing, and the roof is covered with slate, with corniced, shaped end stacks.

Later 19th-century bipartites (windows divided into two sections by a mullion) are found in the centre of the rear elevation, on the first and second floors. Various other gabled and piended single-storey buildings were added to the rear in the 19th century.

Inside, little of the original fabric remains, except for a cantilevered staircase that rises through the centre of the house, with some surviving turned wooden balustrade. A roundheaded hearth is located in the basement, and some earlier fabric is visible.

The armorial on the southwest gable displays the initials “I R” and “I S,” and a plaque beneath reads "A R REBWILT 1767”. A small tower house (listed separately) stands to the southwest of the main house, along with a small privy to the south. The house was undergoing restoration in 1985.
