Description

The Walled Garden at Old Petty in Petty is a tall two-storey and attic house built between 1836 and 1839, with a raised basement. Due to the sloped site, the rear (north) elevation rises to three full storeys. The south frontage features coursed red rubble, while the flanks are finished with harled pointed rubble, accented by tooled ashlar dressings and margins.

The entrance is centrally located and corniced, complete with a rectangular fanlight. It is accessed by a flight of steps that oversails the raised basement, featuring a curved cast-iron balustrade. The steps connect to the frontage at a broad band-course. The house has symmetrical fenestration, including a pair of later 19th-century canted gabled dormers with shaped wooden finials in the outer bays.

The symmetrical rear fenestration is somewhat affected by later bathroom window insertions and a single-storey, irregular three-bay porch that masks the entrance. A gablet with an apex stack rises at the centre of the wallhead. Most windows retain their original 16-pane glazing, and there are coped end stacks and slate roofs. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to garage extension at the east gable, which extends to the height of the raised basement and is visible only as a length of rubble wall at the frontage.

The walled garden, also built between 1836 and 1839, features large coped rubble walls.
