Description

Dr Black's Memorial Hall, located at 22 Bank Street, was designed by Robert John Macbeth and built between 1907 and 1908. This two-storey, five-bay building is a symmetrical church meeting hall in the domestic Queen Anne style, constructed for St Columba High Church, which is also situated on Bank Street. The exterior features squared and snecked pink sandstone with pale sandstone dressings, a base course, a string course, and bracketed eaves. The large bipartite windows have chamfered margins and mullions, and the building is accented with long and short quoins.

At the center of the façade is a substantial two-leaf timber entrance door, topped with a carved name stone and a heavy stone canopy supported by carved stone brackets. There are four carved stone plaques on the first floor, positioned between the windows. The building has a regular pattern of fenestration, with moulded surrounds framing the large bipartite windows.

To the rear (northwest) elevation, there are two piend-roofed stair outshots, with the larger outshot located at the center. Some later infill and an emergency stair addition with a lean-to roof have been made. The principal elevation features large timber sash and case windows with a multi-pane glazing pattern, consisting of nine panes in the top sash and twelve panes in the bottom sash, while the rear has single glazed timber sash and case windows. The traditional slate roof is laid in diminishing courses and includes a pair of ventilators at the ridge, topped with swept pyramidal caps, one of which has a decorative cross finial. The building is equipped with cast iron rainwater goods featuring decorative ties.

Inside, the hall has a central hallway with two-leaf glazed vestibule doors leading to a broad public stair and upper landing, adorned with ornamental cast-iron balustrades and a timber handrail with scrolled newels. The principal rooms have simple plaster cornicing and half timber panelled walls. The ground floor includes two doors leading to a hall on the left and two reception rooms on the right, both featuring moulded timber fireplaces. The large hall at the front of the first floor measures 50 feet by 35 feet and showcases an exposed timber roof structure and a timber floor.
