Description
Croft House, part of the Laidhay Croft Museum, is an early to mid-19th century, single-storey, traditional Caithness croft house of a long-house design. The house is constructed of whitewashed rubble. It has seven irregular bays, featuring four doors and three windows. A byre (animal shelter) occupies the easternmost bay, and a two-stall stable is located in the west. The small, four-paned windows are set low under the eaves. Two diminutive windows are present on the rear elevation, one lighting the stable. The roof is rush-thatched, with two renewed ridge stacks.
The interior was subdivided in the early 20th century and now consists of a long central room, further divided into two sections by box beds, and a kitchen with a dairy adjoining the byre. The living areas have flagged floors, while the byre and stable are floored with cobblestones. A surviving pair of jointed crucks remains in the kitchen.
A barn, constructed of rubble, extends east and west. A door is located near the centre of the west elevation, and a former winnowing door is now blocked. The barn features three pairs of jointed crucks and a flagged floor.
Laidhay Croft was occupied by the Bethune family from 1842 to 1968. The croft house and barn were established and furnished as the Caithness Croft Museum around 1976.
