Description

This is an early 19th-century detached house prominently situated at the corner of Campbell Street and Olrig Street in Thurso. The house is symmetrical, with two storeys and three bays. The principal elevations, facing southeast and northeast, are rendered and lined as ashlar, while the rear (northwest) elevation is constructed of exposed freestone rubble.

The southeast elevation, facing Campbell Street, features a central front door flanked by two windows at ground floor and three windows above. The northeast elevation, facing Olrig Street, has two ground floor windows, two first floor windows, and two small attic windows. A single-storey rendered lean-to extension is attached to the southwest gable.

The windows are fitted with two-pane glazing. A prominent gable-end stack is present on the northeast side, with a renewed and smaller stack at the southwest. The roof is covered in slate.

The interior has been modernised, with the decorative scheme largely dating from the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The house occupies a large plot enclosed by Caithness flagstone boundary walls.

The building was constructed during a period of expansion in Thurso, which was a major port and commercial centre in the early 19th century. The layout of the New Town, designed by Sir John Sinclair, 1st Baronet around 1810, included Campbell Street. 1 Campbell Street first appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1873 as a rectangular detached house, with a footprint that has remained largely unchanged. A single-storey lean-to extension was added to the southwest elevation around the mid-20th century.
