Description
The steading at Ussie Mills dates from the early 19th century, with additions and alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is a quadrangular steading that is open at the northeast. The structure is built from red sandstone rubble, with sections limewashed at intervals and white painted harling on the outer elevations of the two-storey southeast and northeast ranges.
The southeast range is situated on sloping ground and features windows at the ground level, along with short hayloft windows positioned just under the eaves above. There are two later loading doors that break the eaves in piend-roofed dormerheads in the penultimate bays, and the southeast corner is slightly swept out at the loft level. A roof ridge ventilator is located at the southwest end, along with cast-iron rooflights. The northeast gable is blank, featuring a later ashlar stack and sandstone coping. The courtyard elevation includes a boarded timber opening with doors in the re-entrant angle to the southwest.
The northeast range is slightly later and has a piend roof. Its outer elevation consists of four bays arranged in a 3-1 grouping, with doors at ground level (the outer right door is blocked and serves as a window) and short loft windows under the eaves above. There is a blank return to the northwest, a cast-iron rooflight, and the courtyard elevation has sliding doors to the left and an additional rooflight.
The southwest range features timber two-leaf doors leading to the courtyard and a timber lean-to that is blank on the outer elevation. The northwest range has lean-to timber projections towards the courtyard, with timber gableheads and higher external walls. It also has three small high windows on the outer elevation to the right. The roofs are covered with purple slate, and there are stone and zinc flashings.
