Description

James Thomson, architect; circa 1883. Classically detailed

terrace of 9 houses, never completed and thus severely

truncated at W. Polished ashlar, partly stonecleaned. 2

storeys attics and basement with 3-storey terminal pavilions

of 2-bay houses. Wide flights of steps oversailing basement

to Ionic distyle in antis porch; tripartite doorpiece with

glazed sidelights; recessed double-leaf panelled doors. To

left of door; 2-storey canted window rises from basement. All

other windows architraved, consoled and pedimented at 1st

floor. Sash windows, plate glass glazing.

3 storey pavilions; 2-bays per house; canted window to left,

doorpiece to right; detailed as above. 2nd floor windows in

moulded architraves, (tripartite over canted windows.)

Continuous string courses to all cills. Mutule main cornice,

bracketted at pavilions. Deep parapet interrupted by

aedicular pedimented dormers, alternately single or 3-light.

Corniced axial stacks, mostly octagonal flues; slate roofs.

Cast-iron railings to basement. Solid scrolled ashlar parapet

to steps.

East flank: similarly detailed. Droved ashlar rear.

Coped rubble boundary wall to Devonshire Terrace Lane.

Mews cottages at Nos 18, 28 and 32 Devonshire Terrace Lane;

stugged painted ashlar, carriage entrances now windows; axial

corniced stacks.
