Description

James Thomson, architect; circa 1880. Classical terrace

truncated at W; 20 bays arranged 4-12-4. 2-storey with attics

and basement; 3-storey terminal pavilions.

No 12; 4-bay elevation; Nos 13-17, paired 2-bay elevations

with doorpieces to inner bays.

Steps oversailing basement to architraved tripartite doors

with glazed sidelights, flanked by pilasters supporting

cornice. Double-leaf storm doors; vestibule door tripartite

with glazed sidelights. Flanking doors, 2-storey canted

windows. All windows architraved; consoled and corniced at

1st floor. Sash windows, plate glass glazing. Continuous

moulded band course at cills; modillion cornice at pavilions.

To 2-storey range, plain main cornice with deep panel parapet

broken by architraved round-arched dormers with ball finials.

Corniced axial, stacks, octagonal flues, slate roofs.

Flank to No 12; 3-bay polished ashlar similarly detailed.

Corniced wallhead stacks. Flank to No 17, brick.

Rear elevation droved ashlar with mainly 4-pane glazing.

Cast-iron railings to steps and basement. To E of

carriageway, pair of square ashlar gatepiers, corniced and

chamfered.

To rear of No 12, single storey and attic mews cottage, - 12

Sydenham Lane. Droved stonecleaned ashlar with polished

margins. Gabled bays with vehicle access to ground and round

arched window above flank single-storey central bay with

pilastered doorpiece. To E elevation 3-light windows with

pilaster mullions with door to right; bipartite window to 1st

floor.
