Description

1 Blythswood Square in Glasgow is a classical three-storey and basement terrace block consisting of three-bay houses, built around 1829. Notably, No 5 features a stylised Art Nouveau inset pedimented doorpiece designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The main frontage of the building stretches 21 bays long, with the outer three-bay sections raised and projecting forward, adorned with fluted Ionic porticos. The central section on the ground floor has arched entries.

All entries to Blythswood Square include stairs that oversail a basement area. The windows are primarily sash and case, set within architraves, with some featuring 12-pane glazing. The ground floor windows are positioned in recessed arches, complete with moulded cills and aprons. There is a cill band at the basement and first floor, and the first floor windows are corniced. The building has an eaves cornice and a blocking course, along with spearheaded cast-iron railings. The seven-bay returns to Douglas Street and Blythswood Street largely replicate the detailing of the main elevation.

At the rear of No 5 Blythswood Square, there is a rendered addition facing Bath Lane, which includes a five-light timber mullioned and transomed stained glass window with a wrought iron Art Nouveau grille.

Nos 2, 3, and 4 were redeveloped behind the principal elevation in 1987, with some interior work reinstated following the rebuilding behind the façade.
