Description
195 Bath Street in Glasgow is a significant building, likely designed by John Baird I, with construction starting in 1833, and a later block added by Andrew Robertson between 1930 and 1932. This three-storey and basement symmetrical terrace block features 24 bays, arranged in a pattern of 3-6-6-6-3. The end blocks consist of three bays, while the central section has six bays that are slightly advanced. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with the ground floor channelled and painted.
The ground floor has segmentally arched windows, and there are Greek Ionic columned porches at the centre and ends, although these have been altered. The building primarily features sash and case windows set in architraves, with a cornice at the first floor that includes consoled pediments above the centre windows of the end blocks. Notably, a bow window with Corinthian column mullions has been added at No 183. The property at No 181 has a five-bay return to Blythswood Street, which replicates the main detailing and includes a central pilastered doorpiece and a corniced wallhead chimneystack. Additionally, there is a four-storey, three-bay ashlar block at 123 Blythswood Street located at the rear of No 181, with an extra bay on the outer left that contains a stair.
Inside, the Glasgow Art Club at No 185 was remodelled in 1893 by John Honeyman & Keppie. The interior features a panelled and carved door behind a cast iron gate, several chimneypieces, and some leaded glass. There is also an original Ionic screen in the entrance hall and in the dining room.
