Description
4 West Prince's Street in Glasgow is a terraced tenement building dating from around 1850, designed by John Bryce and related to Queen's Crescent. The structure is three storeys high with a basement and features advanced terminal pavilions. It has 34 bays arranged in a pattern of 5-24-5.
The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with a channelled effect at the ground level and some parts painted. Steps lead down to the basement, where there are paired pilastered doorpieces, each with a recessed door that has pilastered reveals and a fanlight above. The upper windows are all architraved, with cornicing at the first floor and pediments at the pavilions. Most of the sash windows have 12-pane glazing patterns.
Additional architectural details include a moulded string-course above the ground floor, a band course at the cills of the third floor, an eaves cornice, a blocking course, and a deep plain parapet at the pavilions. The building has wallhead and axial stacks and is topped with slate roofs. There are cast-iron railings surrounding the basement area and steps, although some are partly damaged.
The five-bay flank facing St George's Road is detailed to match the pavilions, and there are shops located at the ground level, featuring a central doorpiece that is architraved, consoled, and corniced.
