Description
4 Park Gate in Glasgow is an impressive building designed by architect Charles Wilson between 1857 and 1859. It consists of three astylar houses that connect with Nos 16 and 18 Park Circus, featuring three storeys plus a basement and attic. The exterior is made of polished ashlar stone, channelled at the ground level, and has been stone-cleaned, although part of No 1 is painted.
Nos 1, 3, and 5 Park Gate have a four-bay elevation with a recessed left bay that includes tripartite windows. The doorways are also tripartite. There is a wide canted five-light window on the ground and first floors. All windows are architraved, with those on the first floor featuring consoles and cornices. The windows are sash types, with either plate-glass or four-pane glazing. A heavy band course runs above the ground floor, with a string course at the cills of the first and second floors. The building is topped with a mutule cornice and a blocking course, and it has axial stacks and a slate roof.
No 4 Park Gate has a three-bay elevation, with full-height canted bay windows on the left and square bay windows on the right. The centre bay features a tripartite consoled doorpiece. The upper windows are architraved and corniced at the first floor, and they are also sash windows with plate-glass glazing. Band courses are present over the ground floor, and there is a string course at the cills of the first and second floors. The building is finished with a mutule cornice and a deep plain parapet, along with axial stacks and slate roofs. Additionally, there is a metal fire escape stair on the northwest elevation.
