Description
Princes Square, located at 34-58 Buchanan Street in Glasgow, was designed by John Baird in 1854. Originally built as a hotel, it has since been converted into business chambers and commercial use. The building features a courtyard that has been covered over, with significant interior alterations made in 1987.
The main elevation facing Buchanan Street is irregular, consisting of 3-5-5-4-2 bays, with the central five bays and the end sections of three bays each being advanced. The ground floor has modern shop fronts, and there are three pends leading into the square. All windows are framed in architraves, with cornices at the first floor and consoled pediments above the central windows. There is a continuous cill band at the first and second floors, topped with an entablature and a die parapet.
The south side elevation has four advanced bays on the left, featuring an angled bay before the 18 windows of the main elevation, which also has a continuous cill band for the second floor windows. There are doorways at ground level for each of the 18 bays, some of which have been blocked and converted into windows, while some upper windows are blinded.
The east end elevation consists of 18 bays with rounded corners and one consoled, pedimented doorway. The north side elevation, which faces Springfield Court, has 16 bays on the left and center, with a recess to the right before the advanced gable end of the Buchanan Street block, and alterations at ground level.
The building features a 12-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows. The side and rear elevations have leaded parapets, and the roofs include a slated mansard roof and a slated gabled roof over the main west block.
Inside, the former courtyard has been radically altered during the 1987 conversion, which introduced additions in the Art Nouveau style and a glazed, pitched roof.
