Description

4 Hampden Terrace in Glasgow is a large tenement block dating from around 1880. The building consists of two parts: a long tenement block known as Hampden Terrace, which steps down a steep slope and features a large external staircase leading to the closes, and a symmetrical block with shops that has French-roofed ends, facing Cathcart Road.

The entire structure is made of polished ashlar, with original sash and case windows, mostly featuring vertical centre divides (four-pane). The roof is partly covered in modern tiles.

Hampden Terrace has three storeys, with numbers 8 and onwards also including basements; some houses have dormered attics. Each close, or single tenement, has four bays with pairs of bipartite windows at each level, set between full-height bay windows. The ground level is channelled, and the bipartite windows above have architraves, with those on the first floor also featuring cornices. From number 8 onwards, the houses have iron-railed staircases leading to the closes, with numbers 8 and 9 boasting large, winding double flights. The ridge stacks have been rebuilt in brick.

On the Cathcart Road side, the building also has three storeys but is situated on a flat site with entrances at ground level, featuring similar detailing as described above. Small front gardens are present on either side of the front driveway, with low boundary walls where railings have been removed.
