Description

5 Marchmont Terrace in Glasgow is a terrace of houses built around 1870, featuring a design without columns and consisting of 2-bay houses that step down the slope, with No. 10 being a 3-bay house. The exterior is made of polished ashlar stone, with v-channeling at the ground level and some areas that have been cleaned. The buildings are three stories high with a basement.

Each 2-bay elevation has a right side that extends over the basement to a tripartite doorway, which is framed and topped with a cornice and a blocking course. This doorway includes glazed sidelights and a double-leaf door. Above the doorway, there is a single-light window that is also framed and corniced. To the left, a canted 2-storey window rises from the basement, featuring a bracketed cornice and a parapet. The second-floor windows have pilastered reveals, with a tripartite window above the canted window. All windows are sash with plate glass glazing. A continuous cornice runs over the ground floor, linking the doorway and the canted windows, and there is a string course at the cills of the second-floor windows. The main cornice is bracketed, and there is a blocking course above it. The roofs are slate with axial stacks.

No. 10, which is adjacent to Bowmont Gardens on the west side, has a 3-bay elevation similar to the others but includes an additional curved bay on the right. It features tripartite windows on the ground and first floors, with the first-floor window being framed and supported by elaborate consoles that hold a pediment with a thistle motif in the tympanum.

There are cast-iron railings leading to the steps and the basement.
