Description

Eric Sutherland; 1940-42. Single storey neo-classical

savings bank on corner site at Great Western Road and

Otago Street. Polished black and grey granite base

courses, polished ashlar walling, stonecleaned. Main

entrance across angle; steps to plain polished grey

granite doorpiece, recessed double leaf panelled door

with small leaded coloured glass pane. Flanking door,

block granite drums supporting good art deco lamp

brackets. 4-bay elevation to Great Western Road. To

left; 3 tripartite windows with timber transoms; plate

glass. To right; door piece detailed as above. Elevation

to Otago Street; tripartite window flanked by narrow

lights. Plate glass; fanlights and lower portions of

windows acid etched. Banded masonry over cills. Deeply

overhanging plain cornice with block pediment over main

door; slate roofs. Interior; good panelled door and

glazed, panelled vestibule.
