Description

The Savings Bank of Glasgow, built between 1940 and 1942, is a single-storey neo-classical building located at the corner of Great Western Road and Otago Street. It features a polished black and grey granite base and polished ashlar walling that has been stone cleaned. The main entrance is positioned at the angle of the building, with steps leading up to a plain polished grey granite doorpiece, which includes a recessed double leaf panelled door with a small leaded coloured glass pane. Flanking the door are block granite drums that support attractive art deco lamp brackets.

The elevation facing Great Western Road has four bays, with three tripartite windows on the left that have timber transoms and plate glass. To the right, the doorpiece mirrors the detailing of the main entrance. On the Otago Street elevation, there is a tripartite window flanked by narrow lights, with plate glass, fanlights, and the lower portions of the windows acid etched. The building features banded masonry over the cills and a deeply overhanging plain cornice with a block pediment above the main door. The roofs are covered with slate. Inside, there is a well-crafted panelled door and a glazed, panelled vestibule.
