Description

The Former Stockwell Free Church, located at 170-180 Howard Street with 37 Ropework Lane in Glasgow, was built in 1842 as Stockwell Chapel of Ease. This classical Free Church features a two-stage design with a basement and was converted into a warehouse in 1886 by Robert Dalglish, with a small addition made in 1887 by Robert Renfrew. The building has a rectangular plan and is constructed with a painted ashlar base course and west facade, while the other elevations are made of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. It has a moulded eaves cornice.

On the west elevation facing Ropework Lane, the building has a three-bay layout. The center bay is flanked by coupled giant pilasters, topped with an entablature and a parapet that has coped terminal stacks. The center features a round-arched, architraved former window that is currently blocked, with a keystone and a moulded panel above. To the right, there is an architraved doorway with a keystone and an architraved panel above that contains a fanlight and an arched upper window. The left-hand bay includes a basement opening, with an arched panel above, similar to the right bay, and a window at ground level.

The north elevation on Howard Street is symmetrical with five bays, detailed similarly to the west elevation, but with two inserted doors in the outer bays. The east elevation facing Metropole Lane has four bays, featuring two arched windows in the upper stage. The round-arched windows are complemented by panelled aprons, while the basement openings have grilles, and there are small-pane windows throughout.
