Description
32 Westbourne Gardens South is a Gothic terrace built around 1876, consisting of 14 houses arranged in mirrored pairs with two bays. The buildings are two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and feature advanced three-storey, four-bay terminal pavilions that have outer bays that are also advanced.
The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with some areas having been cleaned. The entrance steps extend over the basement and lead to paired tripartite doorways that include glazed sidelights and pointed-arch fanlights with hood-moulds featuring foliate and portrait-head label stops. Engaged columns with various foliate capitals flank the doors, which are double-leaf and panelled. On either side of the doorways, there are projecting two-storey canted windows that rise to an ornamental crenellated parapet. The pavilions have single-storey projecting square windows; the first storey features pointed-arch tripartite windows with continuous hood-moulds, while the second storey has basket-arch tripartite windows.
Most windows are single-light sashes with plate glass glazing, although No 34 has some small-pane leaded glazing in the upper sashes. A continuous band course runs over the ground floor, with roll moulding at the eaves cornice. The gablet dormer above the canted windows has a pointed-arch hood-moulded light, while other dormers have piended overhanging roofs that break through the wallhead of the two-storey terrace.
The flanks of the buildings are also finished in polished ashlar and share similar details to the main elevation. The rear elevation is made of droved ashlar and features two or three-storey projecting square bays on most houses.
There are good cast-iron railings leading to the steps and basement, and a coped coursed rubble boundary wall encloses the lane, with piended-roof coal-sheds present for most houses.
