Description
105 Hope Street in Glasgow is a large commercial building designed by Peddie and Kinnear from 1876 to 1877, originally built as a hotel. It features a 2nd Empire style with Greek architectural details and stands six to eight storeys high, including a double attic within a mansard roof. The building has curved three-bay sections at the angles where it meets Waterloo and Bothwell Streets, and it has 23 bays along Hope Street arranged in a pattern of 5-3-7-3-5.
The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with modern shops occupying the ground floor. The first floor showcases squat pilasters on part of the elevation, and an entablature above supports a giant Greek Corinthian order in three advanced bays facing Hope Street. The second and third floors display a stylised Corinthian anta order across all other bays, with balustraded windows on the second floor and aprons on the third. The fourth floor features a squat pilastrade with bipartite windows.
A main cornice with decorative panels is present above the fourth floor, and there are pilastered and wallhead dormers on the first attic, with a bipartite dormer centrally positioned over the advanced bays. The second attic has round-arched dormers, and the taller mansard roof is located over the advanced bays. The roof is finished with slated mansards and tall corniced stacks. The detailing of the building extends four bays into Waterloo Lane at the rear, with returns to the north and south.
