Description

The O2, formerly the ABC Regal Cinema, located at 304-332 Sauchiehall Street, originated in 1875 as an entertainment venue. It was largely rebuilt by Neil C Duff in 1927 as the Waldorf Palais Dance Hall and converted to a cinema by C J McNair in 1929. In the early 21st century, it was converted into a bar and music venue. This three-storey, eight-bay classical building features a round-arched arcaded top storey and a prominent full-height Classical Modern entrance designed by McNair. The exterior is finished in painted smooth render, with a cornice that separates the first and second storeys and angle pilasters.

The entrance is slightly advanced and off-centre, with a full-height opening flanked by pilasters that support flagpoles at the wallhead. The cornice is topped with an anthemion motif. Above the entrance, there are six small square-plan openings and long slender openings in the pilasters, which are now blocked. The recessed entrance has three pairs of non-traditional two-leaf timber doors, and a large glazed area above the entrance has also been blocked. The ground floor entrance is flanked by shop and bar premises, featuring non-traditional glazing. The first floor has multi-pane glazing with mullions, while the top storey has timber multi-pane windows with mullions and transoms. The roof is complex and multi-pitched, semicircular to the west, covered with corrugated metal.

Inside, the venue has been comprehensively remodelled in the early 21st century, featuring a coloured terrazzo starburst floor in the entrance foyer and a black and white terrazzo floor on the upper landing. The principal venue space showcases an exposed curved steel roof structure.
