Description

78 Dowanhill Street in Glasgow is a three-storey and basement terrace of tenements, designed by architects Hugh and David Barclay in 1901. The terrace features 19 bays, with a six-bay return elevation at Nos 38-40 Highburgh Road, which is similarly detailed. The buildings are constructed from polished red sandstone, with a stugged finish at the basement level.

The entrance steps oversail the basement and lead to doorpieces adorned with stylized pilasters. The doors are double-leaf and panelled, with vestibule doors featuring leaded glass panels and fanlights. The tenements at Nos 78-104 have alternating full-height five-light bow windows and bi/tripartite windows, with variations in rhythm at Nos 92-98 and Nos 38-40 Highburgh Road. All windows have margins, with plate glass lower sashes, while most upper sashes are either small-pane or leaded glazing. A moulded band course runs over each upper floor, continuing around the bow windows. The eaves are accented by a modillion cornice, and there are axial stacks, some with octagonal cans. The roofs are slate, with conical shapes over the bows, featuring tile cresting and finials.

Nos 84-86 Dowanhill Street have a high mansard roof with bow dormers above the bow windows, as well as bipartite piended dormers. The flank wall to No 80 is finished in stugged ashlar. The central bay, which is advanced and three-storeyed, faces the street and includes bipartite windows, steps leading to a pilastered doorway, and good leaded and coloured glass in the door and fanlight.

The rear and flank of No 38 are also finished in stugged ashlar. Low coped ashlar walls enclose the gardens, with steps that support cast-iron railings.
