Lodges And Gate Piers, The Linn Crematorium, Lainshaw Drive, Glasgow

The Lodges and Gate Piers at The Linn Crematorium on Lainshaw Drive in Glasgow were designed by Thomas S Cordiner and opened in 1962. This modern crematorium features inspiration from the Beaux Arts style and is situated on sloping ground, surrounded by landscaped areas.

The main building has an irregular square shape with a bowed south elevation and distinctive cantilevered, canopied cloisters extending southward. It is constructed of brick with concrete dressings, featuring columns and canopies, as well as metal-framed windows. The south elevation, facing the park, showcases a five-bay concrete centerpiece that breaks the eaves and fronts an atrium. This area includes glazed tripartite panels at the ground level, a canopy above, and a tall, decorative lattice grid above that. The lower brick flanking bays are mostly blank, with projecting canopies at the ground level that shelter glazed entrances. There is a small office window above each side, grouped towards the center. Taller cantilevered canopies extend beyond the principal block, enclosing courtyards at the rear. The building has a flat roof with a large, off-center stack.

The canopies consist of splayed cantilevered concrete structures extending from the south elevation, stepping down at intervals. They feature flanged piers and part-glazed four-light exterior bays, terminating in obtusely angled, shallow quadrants that cradle a swathed forecourt, with paved walkways.

The gatepiers and railings are made of coped brick, with distinctive contemporary wrought-iron gates and central reservations that include pierced sheet metal panels below. There are two sets of gates, flanking pedestrian and carriage entrances, located at the south approach, with one set adjoining the lodges and continued by contrasting boundary railings.

The two lodges are single-storey structures with a quadrant plan, located to the south of the crematorium, designed to deflect traffic at right angles. They use the same materials as the main building and feature flat roofs with taller glazed bays flanked by staircases that have decorative metal railings, along with small windows in the lower brick flanking bays that echo the principal block.
