Description
60-62 Trongate in Glasgow is a large Baronial-style building designed by J T Rochead in 1854. This three-storey structure with an attic was built for the City of Glasgow Bank and features shops, offices, and warehousing. The building has a long, irregular 14-window facade facing Trongate and a regular 24-window facade on Albion Street. A prominent tower rises to five storeys at the corner, topped with a high saddle-back roof and dormers. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar, although modern shops on the ground floor have altered the original design.
On the Trongate elevation, all windows are adorned with continuous stepped hoodmoulds. Most windows are square-headed sash and case with plate-glass glazing, while some on the first floor are shallow segmental-arched. Most windows are single light, except for two gabled bays that feature three or four-light windows under shared hood-moulds. Taller gabled bays are located at each end, with the eastern bay showcasing oriel windows on the first and second floors, complemented by a corbelled embattled parapet. The tower above has bartizans at the corners and crowstepped gables, with most gables featuring strapwork pediments over inset raised panels. The dormers are pedimented with raised cills and finials, and the roofs are covered in slate.
The Albion Street elevation consists of 24 regular single light square-headed windows, with details consistent with those on the Trongate elevation.
