Description

Ibrox Stadium, located at 100-170 Edmiston Drive in Glasgow, was designed by Archibald Leitch & Partners and constructed between 1926 and 1929, with an upper deck added by Gareth Hutchison from 1989 to 1990. This three-storey structure, which includes a later fourth storey, features a 25-bay rectangular plan in the Renaissance Revival style. The ground floor has a segmental-headed arcade, while the second floor is distinguished by tall, round-headed keystoned window openings. The building is made of red brick with a metal framework, and it includes string courses and an eaves cornice. There are parapets over the advanced central bay and the end bays, with plain pilasters between each bay that rise from the string course to the eaves cornice.

The entrance is located in the central bay, flanked by engaged columns and pilasters that support a lintel and mutule cornice above. The second floor features a balustrade and four-light windows beneath a large round arch. The flanking bays have pedimented square-headed windows, and a similar arrangement is found in the end pavilions, which contain bi-partite pedimented windows. Mosaic shields displaying a lion rampant are located on the return elevations, inscribed with '1872 Ready 1928' on the west side and '1972 Ready 1981' on the east side. The central parapet has a faience panel inscribed with 'Rangers FC'. The glazing in the 1926-29 section consists of metal framed small panes.

Inside, there is a timber and leaded glass two-leaf central door leading to the lobby, with similarly detailed doors to the right and left. The floor features a mosaic with 'RFC'. Most principal areas have simple plaster cornices and timber panelling, with some original light fittings etched with 'RFC'. A period staircase includes decorative metal panels, a timber handrail, and newel posts. The Blue Room boasts a deeply moulded, classically inspired cornice and timber panelling up to picture rail height, along with a timber and marble chimneypiece. There is a corniced door leading to the Director's room, a boot room with numbered hooks, and a tiled players' bathing room.
