Description
Crathie Court, located at 57 Laurel Street in Glasgow, is a high-rise block of flats designed by Ronald Bradbury in 1946 and completed in 1952. This Modernist building features 6 and 8 stories and is arranged in a U-shape, with balcony-access flats set on a sloping site within its own grounds. The structure has a reinforced concrete frame, which has been later rendered over the original pre-cast concrete facing slabs. It includes continuous, horizontal, open-air cantilevered access balconies on the north, east, and west sides, accented by contrasting trim. Three staircase towers rise above the roofline, showcasing full-height, long vertical windows alongside small round nautical windows. The window openings are rectangular, and there are replacement timber doors. Surrounding the building are rendered terrace walls to the south, east, and west, which feature a later decorative metal screen, as well as a random rubble terrace wall and steps to the south.
On the north elevation, the entrance features an off-centre, slightly curved flat-roofed porch made of random rubble, which includes a nautical window and a timber and glass entrance door with sidelights. Behind this porch is a staircase tower with a full-length window and raised margins. To the right, there is a recessed 6-storey wing with a corner staircase tower, while the left side has an 8-storey wing, also with a corner staircase tower.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, with projecting outer wings. It has off-centre stairs leading to a slender flat-roofed porch, topped by a tall 8-storey stair tower with a full-length window to the right. There is a balcony at the top storey on the right side, and a later flat-roofed extension to the far left.
The building predominantly features replacement plastic windows and has flat and piended roofs.
Inside, as of 2012, the original number of single-person flats (88) remains, along with one 2-bedroom flat that was originally used as caretaker's accommodation. The interior includes a common room, three lift shafts, stone-tiled staircases, and some timber painted number boards. The individual flat layouts are believed to be as originally designed, including a bed alcove.
The terrace wall to the south is a full-width coped random rubble structure.
