Description

The Janitor's House at Hillhead High School, located at 44 Oakfield Avenue in Hillhead, Glasgow, is a building designed by E G Wylie, which won a competition in 1921 and was completed in 1929. This double Y-plan school building features a central administrative and general block with classroom ranges that radiate from a gallery. The design includes end and angle blocks that create a pseudo-tower effect. The building stands three stories tall and is constructed of red brick, with exposed concrete and some ashlar dressings.

The elevation facing Hillhead Street has a parapet that is raised at the center, featuring an inset monogram. The rear windows of the classrooms are grouped in threes with pilaster mullions, and the windows on the first and second floors are linked in a panel. The gallery elevations to the east are partially infilled.

The entrance lodge on Hillhead Street is set into a slope and consists of two and three stories, featuring a wide tripartite entrance. The first floor has three small bipartite windows, and the side elevations display arched and keystoned details. The roof is a bell-cast design made of Westmorland slate, with coped stacks.

The elevation facing Southpark Avenue mirrors the Hillhead Street elevation, but it has a wide entrance bay that is vertically emphasized with canted angles. A wide door is set within moulded architraves, which include some simple carved details. The open galleries to the east are detailed similarly to the other elevations.

Inside, there is a galleried hall that features a war memorial plaque, which was relocated from Hillhead Primary School in 2013. Original panelled doors are still present, and there is simply detailed ironwork on the guard rail above the stair balustrade.
