Description

2 and 2A Millbrae Crescent in Glasgow is a notable building constructed between 1876 and 1877, designed in the style of Robert Turnbull, who was known for continuing "Thomsonesque" designs after Alexander Thomson's death in 1875. This unusually long two-storey terrace is curved in plan and features paired gables at either end. Each house, primarily three-bay, has paired doorcases with central columns that are derived from Egyptian design. The first-floor windows are adorned with pilasters that rise from the window jambs, and there are anthemia in recessed panels between them, along with a frieze that includes discs.

The building is made of snecked and squared rubble with polished dressings, and most of the stone has been cleaned, although two houses (numbers 26 and 32) have been painted. The windows are unmargined and consist of plate glass sashes, while the gable windows are mullioned. The eaves are deep and bracketed, featuring fret-worked timber gable-heads, and the chimney cans are designed in the style of Thomson. The roofs are shallow-pitched and slated, and there are small front gardens. The flanks of the building are asymmetrical.
