9 Lancaster Crescent, Glasgow

9 Lancaster Crescent in Glasgow is a terrace of houses built in two phases: Nos 3-7 were designed by architect J L Cowan in 1898, while Nos 8-9 were created by J C McKellar in 1907. The terrace features wide, three-bay houses that are two storeys tall with attics, constructed from polished ashlar stone. All the houses share similar architectural details, although Nos 8-9 are simpler in ornamentation and have been cleaned of stone.

For Nos 3-7, there is a low flight of steps leading to a central tripartite doorpiece that includes glazed sidelights, mostly leaded. The entrance is supported by elaborate consoles and features a cornice with a pierced ashlar parapet, which has cast-iron insets at Nos 6 and 7. The entrance includes double-leaf panelled storm doors, and the vestibule door has glazed, mostly leaded panels along with a fanlight. Flanking the door are corniced canted windows with a blocking course. The first floor has five single light sash windows with plate glass glazing, and there is a continuous string course at the ground and first floor cills. The eaves have strings, a plain cornice, and a deep plain parapet.

Nos 8 and 9 are characterized by a Corinthian pilastered doorpiece flanked by canted four-light windows at the ground level. The first floor features six single light windows. These houses have a plain main cornice and a deep parapet that is interrupted by a modern concrete balustrade in front of the dormers, which come in various shapes. Notably, Nos 6 and 7 have round-headed dormers. The rear elevations are finished in coursed stugged ashlar, with large irregular two-storey wings at the back, and Nos 5 and 6 have large modern roughcast extensions.

The property is enhanced by good cast-iron railings leading to the steps and some front gardens.
