Description
The Wallace Monument is a roadside structure erected in 1900 to commemorate the reputed site of the house where Sir William Wallace, the Guardian of Scotland, was betrayed in 1305. This tall cross is made of pink granite and was crafted by the sculptors McGlashen from Edinburgh, who signed their work. The design of the cross, although not the details, is inspired by St Martin's cross from Iona. The monument is raised high on a granite plinth and is surrounded by plain iron railings. The site is set back into a field, with the farm dyke having been breached and rebuilt around the monument, featuring slender pink ashlar square piers that have been reused from another location.
