Description
63-71 St George's Road in Glasgow is an Edwardian baroque tenement building designed by architects F Burnet and W J Boston around 1900. It occupies a prominent corner site at the intersection of St George's Road and Woodlands Road. The main facade, facing the corner (numbers 63-65), features four storeys with attics and shops at the ground level. The corner elevation has two bays that project slightly at the ground floor, topped by a balustraded balcony, while the flanks consist of ten bays made of polished red ashlar.
The main corner facade showcases two canted oriel windows that extend through the first, second, and third floors. The attic windows are segmentally arched and adorned with carved spandrels. Flanking the oriels are two tourelles that are corbelled from the angles. At the second floor, these tourelles are connected by a corbelled balcony featuring a cast-iron balustrade, and at the eaves, there is an ashlar balustrade with a central clock feature. The tourelles have lead ogee-dome roofs with lead finials, while the building is topped with a steeply pitched French roof that also has a cast-iron balustrade.
The symmetrical flanks of the building include near full-height canted oriels, with aedicula details at the second floor that display a variety of pediment heads, culminating in a segmental gable with a tripartite window. The remaining windows are either single light or bipartite sash windows with plate glass glazing. A continuous string course runs along the third floor cills, and there is a roof balustrade situated between the gables. The building features some tall wallhead stacks and axial stacks, all covered by slate roofs.
