Description

383, 385, 387, and 389 Dumbarton Road in Glasgow is a four-storey and attic tenement block designed by F Burnet and Boston in 1903, featuring modern shops on the ground floor. The building has a striking facade with five main bays and nine sections, including bowed corner sections at the northeast and northwest. It is constructed of polished ashlar and includes sash and case windows with glazing bars in the upper panes, although some have been altered. The second, third, fifth, and sixth bays from the east have shallow canted bays, while the second, third, and fifth bays from the north extend to Lime Street. There is a cornice at the ground floor and a cill band at the third floor.

On the elevation facing Dumbarton Road, the building showcases bold northwest and northeast corner turrets, each topped with a bracketed balustraded balcony at the fourth floor, pepper-pot roofs with finials, and attached wallhead stacks. A moulded segmental pediment is positioned above the central window in the tripartite bays at the first floor, with two-light windows and narrow windows featuring sculpted pediments at the second floor. The building has a balustraded parapet, and the gables of the tripartite dormers in the second and sixth bays are complemented by balconies in front, while the third and fifth bays have canted full-height sections with set-back roofs. Additional set-back dormers are present as well.

The elevation to Lime Street continues the arrangement of the main elevation, featuring a full-height canted bay rising to the attic in the third bay and a gabled dormer without a balcony in the fifth bay. Wallhead stacks are attached to the third and fifth bays. The elevation to Merkland Street mirrors the main elevation but has a plain fifth storey that replaces the attic. The roofs are covered with slate.
