Description

368, 370, and 372 Dumbarton Road in Glasgow is a long, three-storey classical tenement built around 1860. It forms most of a quadrangular street block, with modern shops occupying the ground floor along Dumbarton Road and partially on the east and west returns. The ground floor features polished ashlar stonework that is channelled on the east return and is partly painted. The building has sash and case windows set in architraves, with cornicing on the first floor and glazing that varies between 4, 6, and 12 panes. It has an eaves cornice and a blocking course, topped with a slate roof and axial stacks.

The elevation facing Dumbarton Road consists of 44 bays arranged in a pattern of 4-36-4, with the end sections advanced. The central bays are glazed blind, and there are blind bays below the wallhead stacks in the end sections, which also feature balustraded parapets. The close entries are corniced, and the outer bays of the east end section have tripartite windows, while the west end section has 2-light windows.

On the east return to Fortrose Street, there are 21 bays with blind windows below the wallhead stacks. The detailing is similar to the main front, with the addition of cill bands. This return includes a 3-bay section leading to Burgh Hall Street, featuring an advanced tripartite east bay, with a corniced architraved central entry and console corniced first-floor windows in the west bays.

The return to Peel Street has 8 bays that repeat the detailing of the east elevation. The ground floor has been altered, while the first-floor windows are corniced, with bipartite windows located in the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 8th bays from the south.
