Description

36 Cleveden Drive in Glasgow is a B-listed terrace of houses designed by architect J C McKellar between 1904 and 1905. This 20-bay terrace features asymmetrical houses, with numbers 30 to 40 having three bays each, while number 28 has two bays and a stepped back porch on its east flank. The buildings are two storeys high, with an attic and basement, constructed from polished stone-cleaned ashlar.

The windows are adorned with stone mullions and/or transoms. For houses 30 to 38, there are steps leading to a centrally placed doorway, which includes a single sidelight set in a lugged architrave, topped by a segmental hood supported by corbels. To one side of the door, particularly at number 34, there is a full-height canted window with an embattled parapet that breaks the eaves line. Above the door, a large bipartite stair light features leaded glazing, while the remaining windows are tripartite. The sash windows have plate glass glazing, with some upper sashes being leaded. The eaves are deeply overhanging and supported by timber brackets. The roofs are slate-covered, showcasing a variety of dormer shapes and corniced axial stacks.

Number 28 has a two-bay elevation to Cleveden Drive, detailed similarly to the main terrace, with a polished ashlar east flank and balustraded steps leading to the porch, where the door matches the main terrace design. Number 40 features a wide three-bay facade with steps leading to the doorway, which has a carved spandrel. There is a canted window to the left of the door and a tripartite window to the right. The west angle has a corbelled tourelle with pilastered windows and a bell-cast finialed roof. All windows throughout the terrace have multi-pane glazing.

The west flank is finished in stugged ashlar, featuring two polished ashlar stacks that rise from brackets at the first floor and break through the gable line. The terrace is enclosed by coped stugged ashlar boundary walls and square corniced ashlar gatepiers, with two pairs located at number 40.
