Description
1 Kingsborough Gardens in Glasgow is a pair of asymmetrical mirrored houses designed by architect D Woodburn Sturrock in 1899. These two-storey buildings, which include attics and a basement, are constructed from polished red ashlar stone.
The terminal bays feature four-light bow windows that extend from the basement to the full height of the houses. Steps lead down to recessed double-leaf panelled doors, which are topped with leaded glazed fanlights. The vestibule doors also have leaded glass panels and fanlights. In the inner bays, there are paired three-light projecting square windows on the ground floor, each with slated roofs. Above these, brattishing creates a plant box for the bipartite windows. There is a bipartite window over the doors that has a bracketed cill. The houses have sash windows with plate glass glazing, and a band course runs above the ground floor. The overhanging eaves are supported by timber modillions.
The roofs are steeply pitched, covered in slate with red tile cresting, and feature axial stacks with octagonal flues. The bow window at No 1 has a conical roof, while No 3 has bipartite dormers and a three-light bow dormer with a conical roof. The western flank is made of irregular bull-faced ashlar, and the rear elevation is stugged ashlar. The eastern flank adjoins No 5 Kingsborough Gardens, which is also made of polished red ashlar and features a two-bay design with a corbelled canted oriel window on the first floor. The upper sashes of this house have good leaded glass.
At the basement, there is a coped ashlar wall with steps that support cast-iron railings, which are held up by intermediate square ashlar piers.
