Description

The Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Buildings, located at 125 and 127 St Vincent Street in Glasgow, were designed by Robert Hutchison and completed in 1897. This five-storey building with an attic features a six-storey corner tower and showcases a Free Renaissance architectural style.

The façade is constructed of red ashlar and presents two asymmetrical bays on St Vincent Street and three bays on Hope Street. All windows are either mullioned or mullioned and transomed. The entrance is positioned at a splayed angle and is flanked by two arched windows, both of which are pilastered. Above, there are smaller bipartite windows that are also pilastered and topped with pediments. A bold sculpted corbel table is located above the first turning splay, leading to a series of mullioned and transomed windows on the second, third, and fourth storeys, which feature broken segmental pediments and balconies. The fifth storey includes oval windows set in carved frames, and the building is topped with a steep conical roof that has an apex cupola.

On the St Vincent Street side, the windows are canted at the ground level through the second storeys, with a basket-arched window on the third storey and a four-light window on the fourth storey, all crowned by an elaborate stepped gable. The detailing continues on the Hope Street side, where there is a canted oriel window above the ground floor extending to the second storey, flanked by gables at the centre. An additional entrance is found in the narrow west bay on St Vincent Street. The steep roof is covered with Westmoreland slate and features a red tile ridge, along with tall corniced and panelled chimney stacks. The curved bay facing St Vincent Lane is corbelled to an octagonal shape at the fourth storey, and the roof has a bell-cast design made of green slate.
