Description
5 Crown Road South in Glasgow is a curved terrace of three houses designed by architect David Barclay between 1908 and 1912. The terrace is truncated at the south end and consists of seven bays arranged in a 3-2-2 pattern. It is two storeys high with a basement, constructed from polished red ashlar with a stugged finish at the basement level.
Number 5 features steps that oversail the basement, leading to double-leaf panelled doors flanked by leaded glass sidelights. The ground floor includes a square three-light projecting window to the left and a canted two-storey four-light window to the right. The first-floor windows are bipartite, with a three-light dormer situated above the canted window.
Numbers 7 and 9 have a two-storey canted bay window to the left, with steps leading to a double-leaf doorpiece that includes a glazed fanlight. Above the door is a bipartite window. All the houses feature sash windows, with plate glass in the lower sashes and small pane glazing in the upper sashes. A band course over the ground floor continues as a cornice around the bay windows. The eaves overhang and are supported by timber brackets, while the corniced axial stacks are located at the party wall, adorned with decorative skew-putts and red tile cresting.
The terrace is complemented by cast-iron railings leading to the steps, which are flanked by squat, square ashlar gatepiers. A low coped ashlar wall encloses the gardens. The terrace adjoins 65 Dowanside Road to the north, with its south flank rendered. The rear elevation is constructed from coursed, stugged ashlar.
