Savings Bank Buildings, 378-384 Cathcart Road, Govanhill, Glasgow

The Savings Bank Buildings, located at 378-384 Cathcart Road in Govanhill, Glasgow, were designed by J C McKellar and completed in 1903. This four-storey corner tenement was originally built as Savings Bank Buildings, as indicated by an inscription. The ground floor has been significantly altered for use as a bank and shops, while the upper levels feature stone-cleaned red ashlar. The building exhibits an Art Nouveau style, characterized by a canted corner bay that is supported by corbels and topped with a turret that has a conical roof behind a parapet. This turret is flanked by two tall stacks that are also corbelled out from just above the first floor. The main roof has deep eaves and is situated between gabled bays, each of which contains canted windows. There are aedicules at the first floor, and the building features a mix of single and grouped lights, with some original plate glass sash windows still intact.
