Description

Victoria Grain Mills, located at 155-159 West Street in Glasgow, is a Grade B listed building designed by W F McGibbon in 1894 and 1896. This ornate Flemish style grain mill consists of three sections and features a combination of three and four storeys with an attic, constructed primarily of brick.

The first section, built in 1894, is a three-storey, five-bay block. The ground floor has been altered, though the cornice remains intact. Tall basket-arched recesses extend through the first and second floors, where large transomed and mullioned windows are set in an arched head on the second floor. The narrower fifth bay houses a staircase, and the curvilinear gable is adorned with three tall arched windows over the two end bays. The roof is slate.

The second section, completed in 1896, is a corner block with three bays on each side. The small ground floor windows have been blocked. It features basket-arched recesses similar to those in the first section, spanning three floors. Each elevation has mullioned windows with a V-oriel in the outer bay of the first floor. A tall corner tower includes two twin arched and hoodmoulded windows on each side, topped with a corbelled machicolated parapet and battlements. This section formerly housed a water cistern.

The third section, also from 1896, is a four-storey and attic two-bay block that faces West Street. It is detailed similarly to the previous sections, with triple arched windows in the curvilinear gable and a small crowning segmental pediment. The two blocks facing West Street are connected by a recessed cart entry, which includes a former engine house and grain silo at the rear. There are linking iron gantries around a hoist, along with a later brick gantry on the third floor and modern metal sheeting below. A V-oriel window faces inward.

Inside, the ground and first floors retain original concrete floors and steel supports, while the upper floors feature iron columns, steam beams, and wooden floors.
