Description
The building is a former gymnasium and cinema constructed between 1939 and 1940. It features a 7-bay pitched roof and a lower recessed 2-storey flat-roofed projection on the south elevation. This projection has a central triple set of 2-leaf timber doors at ground level, topped with simple rectangular fanlights. The exterior is finished with smooth cement rendered brick and includes metal-framed windows, some of which are multi-pane with top hoppers. The first floor of the flat-roofed projection has non-traditional glazing, and the roof is made of asbestos.
Inside, the building retains some interesting features, which are rarely found at Crail Airfield. There is a canted timber ticket booth in the entrance area, and the main cinema/gymnasium space has a sprung timber floor. Some original equipment, such as ropes and timber beams, is still present, along with a tiered gallery inset to the north.
