Description

The Walled Garden at Balbirnie House, built between 1784 and 1786 by Robert Robinson and altered in 1863, possibly by David Bryce, features coped rubble walls with rounded corners. The walls have been heightened and lined with coped brick to accommodate a heating system on the northern side, and they include polished ashlar and sandstone dressings.

On the northern boundary, there is a range of lean-to rubble outbuildings with droved quoins, along with an 8-bay implement shed supported by 7 cast iron columns across the center and eastern side of the northern elevation. A pedestrian gate to the west is accompanied by a hand bell. The southern elevation contains late 19th-century lean-to greenhouses, which are in poor condition and feature a small pane glazing pattern.

The southern boundary has a widened opening at the center that provides access to a lower boundary wall beyond, although some top courses to the west are missing. The western boundary includes a two-leaf timber gate set in a round-headed opening with rusticated quoins and voussoirs. The gate is monogrammed with entwined "B's" (representing Balfour of Balbirnie) on the eastern side and features a decorative date panel on the western side.

The eastern boundary consists of rubble over squared and coursed rubble, with an abutting wall to the east that has large quoins, suggesting evidence of a former doorway. The outer boundary to the south and east is marked by a low coped rubble wall, which includes a pyramidal coped ashlar pier to the southwest and a holly hedge. To the north, there is a high terrace wall.
