Description

The War Memorial in Nicholson Park, Cupar, was designed by John Kinross in 1922, featuring a Victory statue by H S Gamley and piers added in 1950. This square columnar memorial showcases Classical Greek details and is situated on a steeply sloping ground to the east. Wide steps, flanked by two-stage square-section piers, lead up to a rectangular paved platform surrounded by decorative ironwork railings on three sides, with a three-stage square-section memorial at the center. The memorial contrasts bronze and granite materials.

The memorial itself has a stepped granite plinth with a pulvinated band beneath a narrow frieze that reads, "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CUPAR TOWN AND PARISH WHO FELL IN 1914-1918." Each face of the reduced second stage features a corniced and fielded bronze memorial tablet below a decorative frieze, with stylised fluted square-section urns set into the outer angles. Above this, a plain band leads to a cresting of alternating large and small bronze acroteria. The further reduced third stage includes a decorative frieze and cornice beneath a monumental bronze winged Victory statue facing west.

The platform and boundary walls consist of narrow bull-faced bands topped with a plain ashlar band and inset decorative ironwork railings. On the west elevation, there are two granite piers, each with a plinth that corresponds to the memorial plinth. These piers feature a band dated '1939' on the left and '1945' on the right, with a plain second stage that includes a bronze memorial tablet on the west face and a corniced decorative frieze leading to a bronze 'flame' finial.

At the base of the memorial, there is a commemorative flagstone inscribed with "QUEEN MARY PLACED A WREATH HERE ON AUGUST 30TH 1923." The east elevation has a voussoired, ogee-topped, round-headed door at the center, with the memorial positioned high on the platform above. The north and south elevations feature scale-and-platt steps alongside boundary walls.
