Description

The North West Range at Burnside of Letham is a farmstead dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some later alterations. The farmhouse, which has a front that was recast in the mid-19th century, is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a single-storey former byre wing. It is built of coursed sandstone featuring raised ashlar quoins and a first-floor cill course on the south side, while the other elevations are predominantly whitewashed rubble with irregular massive quoins.

On the southeast elevation, there is a part-glazed timber door in the central bay, with bipartite windows in the flanking bays and regular fenestration on the first floor. The northeast elevation remains largely unaltered, featuring a door to the left of centre, a small window to the right at ground level, a stair window in the centre, and another small window to the left on the first floor. The single-storey former byre wing has a small window on the outer left. The windows are modern timber with small-pane glazing that open outward, and the roof is covered with modern red pantiles. Gable stacks are present on both the west and east sides, complete with thackstanes and cans. The interior has been modernised.

The watermill, located to the southwest, features a piend-roof and is constructed of rubble with large irregular sandstone quoins and margins. The floor is earth. The west elevation has a bay to the right of centre with a lean-to roof over the wheelhouse, a timber-lintelled door, and a tiny opening to the right. Inside, there is a six-spoke steel-framed overshot wheel still in place. The mill lade, now disused, is supported on brick piers to the left, with small openings above on the outer left and right. The east elevation, facing the courtyard, has a door to the left of centre with an opening above it, and a further two-leaf door to the right. The interior allows access to the water mill mechanism through a timber boarded section, with riddling pans supported at the first floor on timber beams and a shoot below.

The steading is built of rubble in a U-plan, featuring a double piended range projecting to the southeast and the piended mill building to the southwest. There is a variety of original openings on the south elevation of the courtyard, including a broad door below a hayloft door with flanking windows to the left, and two segmental cart arches to the outer left. The roofing is predominantly corrugated, although some pantiles are retained over the cart arches and partly on the projecting range to the southeast. Inside, some timber trevises remain in the range to the north.
