Description
The Limekiln at Ceres, Craighall Den, dates back to 1814 and is a well-preserved example of a rectangular-plan disused single pot limekiln. It features four draw arches and is situated near a footpath and the site of Craighall Castle. This limekiln is typical in both plan and size for its period, built into raised ground to facilitate vehicular access for loading limestone from above, and it has arched openings on its exposed faces.
The structure is constructed from snecked rubble, which includes some carved stones likely reclaimed from the ruins of the castle. It has segmentally-headed, voussoired draw arches and a passage leading to the rear, with battered angles.
The south elevation faces the footpath and includes a single arched entrance at the center, positioned below a moulded datestone.
