Description
The Steadings is an earlier 19th century classical steading that was partly demolished in 1995. The southeast range has been retained and converted into dwellings, while the steading courtyard at the rear was replaced with a variety of new homes built on the original footprint between 1996 and 1997. This well-detailed, two-storey, eight-bay, L-plan building is situated close to a separately listed farmhouse.
The principal elevation features a pedimented entrance with two voussoired carriage arches and a glazed oculus in the tympanum. The structure is constructed from decoratively snecked whinstone rubble, with contrasting dressed sandstone quoins and raised margins on the southeast, northeast, and gabled bay of the southwest elevation. The rear elevation, facing the courtyard, is harled. Additional architectural details include a deep eaves lintel course and elliptical-arched carriage openings.
On the principal southeast entrance elevation, there are two slightly advanced central bays beneath the pediment, with outer bays that contain central doors flanked by windows. The first floor has tiny windows, which were former hayloft openings, above each bay, along with a modern rooflight over the outer six bays. The northeast elevation features a relief-carved stone dated 1600 and an incised date of 1821.
The windows are double glazed with timber swivel and sash and case designs, featuring small pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered with uniform grey slates, and the pediment is topped with ashlar-coped skews. The interior has been converted into dwellings in the 1990s.
