Description

Carrongrove House, built between 1860 and 1862 by Andrew Heiton Junior, is a well-detailed two-storey Tudor Gothic house located at the heart of a paper mill, originally serving as the manager's house. In the later 20th century, it was converted into offices. The house was originally designed in a U-plan with single and low two-storey service quarters framing a shallow court, which has since been filled in with a mansard roof link, resulting in a rectangular plan. It features sandstone ashlar construction with a base course, a dividing string course, and an eaves cornice. The windows have pointed arch carved heads, and there are stone gabled dormer heads.

The elevations are asymmetrical, with the entrance elevation facing south, showcasing a tripartite doorway set in a projecting and battered gabled bay, topped by a corbelled canted stone oriel. The east elevation includes a full-height canted bay and a corbelled projecting bipartite window, which features a carved entwined date monogram. The north elevation steps down to lower two-storey service bays on the west side. The building has gablet skewputts and sawtooth skews, along with polygonal stacks that have decorative carved copes. The windows are vertically sliding timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, and the slate roof is adorned with fishscale bands and decorative metal brattishing along the ridges.

Inside, the house boasts fine Tudor Gothic joinery throughout the principal rooms and good plasterwork. Although the conversion to office use has impacted the scheme, most changes are reversible. Notable interior features include carved doorcases with linenfold panelling on doors and window shutters, a grand timber staircase with a multifoil carved balustrade and trefoil finials, and a decorative coloured and painted glass tripartite stair window. The library includes a fitted bookcase with matching doorcases, while the former drawing room features a Gothic marble chimney piece. The entrance vestibule is enhanced with etched glass.
