Description
The railings and boundary walls of Dean Road Cemetery, built around 1881, feature notable grave monuments. Along Dean Road, there are four large square stone gatepiers with cornices, base courses, and overhanging pyramidal caps, arranged to create two side pedestrian entrances and one inner vehicular entrance. A similar set of four gatepiers, painted and with integral kerbstones, is located on Dundas Street. On Deanfield Street, there is another set of four gatepiers, with some parts sympathetically replaced, and pedestrian access to the right is now partially infilled.
The boundary wall along Dean Road is low, stepped, squared, and snecked sandstone, topped with decorative railings. All gatepiers feature decorative cast-iron gates. To the west, there is a high sandstone rubble wall with semicircular coping.
The cemetery contains late Victorian to present day monuments, many made of granite. Notably, to the east, there is a particularly fine unpolished granite monument dedicated to George Cadell Stewart and his wife Tamar Taylor Tweedie, created by W G Rowan. This monument is flanked by advanced square piers and features an incised Lamb of God with Evangelists, and it is signed and dated 1914 by Rowan.
