Description

St Mary's Building, located at 197 Corbiehall, was designed by Matthew Steele in 1935. It is a striking, symmetrical, monumental three-storey, 25-bay rectangular block. The exterior is cement rendered with some painted details. Large, advanced, steeped three-bay sections that break the eaves indicate the entrances, with the outer bays featuring added steep gable details. The windows are bipartite, with a single light in the three-bay entrance sections.

On the north elevation, entrances are located at bays 3, 8, 13, 18, and 23. A full-height advanced single bay breaks the eaves and features vertical curved tile detail at the top. There is a deeply recessed 12-pane stair window on the first and second floors, and at ground level, there is a chunky flat-roofed single-storey doorpiece flanked by advanced single bays that also break the eaves.

The south elevation has regularly spaced entrances at ground level, with railed double balconies on the first and second floors. The building features modern glazing and a pitched slated roof, with near gable stacks evenly spaced on the north and south elevations.

The interior was not seen in 2004. The boundary walls to the north consist of a low rendered wall with sandstone coping and railings, which turn at right angles to the entrances.
