Description

Ferndean, located at 5 Arthurlie Avenue in Barrhead, is a Glasgow Style villa designed by Honeyman and Keppie between 1899 and 1900. This two-storey, four-bay building features a lower, projecting, semi-circular stair tower on its front elevation, constructed from tooled, squared, and snecked red sandstone with smooth margins. It includes a band course and has overhanging dentilled timber eaves. A small, flat-roofed extension has been added to the northwest.

The principal elevation is asymmetrical, with steps leading to an off-centre, wide round-arched entrance doorway that has raised quoins. The entrance features a six-panel timber door with sidelights and a fanlight, as well as a part-glazed inner door with glazed sidelights and some stained glass. To the right, the advanced semi-circular stair tower has a five-light stair-light on the upper storey and a conical slated roof. There is a gabled bay with skewputts at the far right.

The villa predominantly has nine-pane over plate glass timber sash and case windows, along with other fixed windows, some of which include stained glass. The roof is covered with grey slates, and decorative cast iron rainwater goods and ridge stacks are present.

Inside, as seen in 2010, the villa features a fine interior with a largely intact cohesive decorative scheme. It includes a dog-leg staircase with decorative carved timber balusters and an internal part-glazed screen to the upper floor with stained glass details. Other decorative stained glass features Arts & Crafts stylised floral motifs, while some ceilings have decorative plaster strapwork. The interiors also include simple stone fire surrounds, seven-panel timber doors, and simple cornicing.

To the northwest, there are gatepiers consisting of a pair of square-plan structures with a base course and curved caps.
