Description
Luggate is an earlier 19th century steading that replaced previous buildings. It features squared and snecked red sandstone, with some sections being stugged, rubble, and having ashlar dressings. The south range follows the slope of the ground and includes a swept hayloft opening that breaks the eaves, along with louvred ventilators and former doors that have been blocked. There is a machinery door on the west gable end, and cattle courts to the east. The structure has segmental archways leading into the byres and sturdy square, pyramid-capped gatepiers at each court. The northern and eastern elevations are largely blank. There are sliding doors to feeding hatches, unusual timber divisions to troughs, and timber beams on corbels in a characteristic East Lothian style.
To the west, there is a threshing mill with a later red brick circular section stalk on a tall pedestal.
The cartsheds include a 2-bay gabled cartshed and granary to the west of the steading, featuring segmental cart-arches to the south and two hayloft windows above. The gable ends also have hayloft windows. Across the road, there is a 3-bay earlier cartshed and granary to the south, which has a gabled bothy attached to the east gable. This structure has three segmental cart-arches on the north elevation, with a cut-down window above the centre arch and windows above the outer bays. There is a stone forestair leading to the doorway on the west gable, with similar hayloft openings on the south side and a modern lean-to addition at ground level. The bothy has a gable-end stack, with two doorways, one window, and a later machinery door on the south elevation, along with a louvred ventilator.
The single-storey cartshed range to the west has pantiles on the cattle court ranges and the single-storey cartshed, while the cartshed and granary blocks have corrugated asbestos roofing, and the threshing mill has modern roofing.
